Patient Care Technician/Certified Nursing Assistant Residency Program

The (PCT) patient care technician/(CNA)certified nursing assistant residency program is a unique paid 10-week program in partnership with the Delaware Skills Center, Dawn Carrer Institute and Christiana Care Health System that integrates classroom and clinical components. Upon successful completion of the 6-week Certified Nursing Assistant Course, the individual will take the Delaware State Test for Nurse Aide Certification. The candidate will then transition to Christiana Care and complete approximately 4 weeks of clinical training.

  • The first 6 weeks of instructor led didactic and clinical with Delaware Skills Center in New Castle, DE or Dawn Career Institute in Newark, DE
  • The following 4 weeks of preceptor led clinical training in an acute care inpatient setting at one of our campuses in Newark or Wilmington
  • ****NOTE:  If selected for this program – the starting rate of pay will be $16.50 hourly with healthcare benefits during the training and fully paid tuition****

This program requires that you attend Monday through Friday between 6:30am – 4:00pm for 6 weeks. Once the residency program is complete, at the end of the 6 weeks, you will be assigned to work in a ChristianaCare unit for one year or 1800 hours per agreement. The working locations will be at Newark, DE, or Wilmington, DE Campus working full-time/flex (36 hours weekly/72 hours bi-weekly) including every other weekend and rotating holidays (Evening/Midnight shifts are available now with the potential of some Day/Eve shifts to choose from).

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) supports activities of daily living under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse. The PCT must demonstrate the skills and knowledge necessary to provide care to adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.  Primary job duties include, but not limited to, performing and accurately recording vital signs, Accu-checks, bathing, grooming, toileting, feeding, and mobilizing patients.  PCT's are an essential part of the nursing care team with an expectation to support the organizations patient safety goals and initiatives.
 
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Demonstrates skills and knowledge necessary to provide care appropriate to patients in various stages of development.

  • Performs assigned nursing duties for the comfort and well-being of patients.

  • Responds to patient crisis situation and initiates interventions within the scope of responsibilities and notifies RN.

  • Performs successful finger sticks on patients, following all standard laboratory safety policies.

  • Performs defined procedures on point of care instrumentation.

  • Provides 1:1 observation for 1-2 patient(s) experiencing a psychiatric crisis, suicidal/homicidal ideation under the order of a physician in Powerchart.

  • Provides 1:1 observation for 1-2 patient(s) at risk for safety based on nursing assessment and order in Powerchart

  • Responds with promptness, empathy and interest to needs of patients.

  • Communicates to patients, employees, and physicians utilizing courteous verbal and written communication skills.

  • Completes mandatory in-service education.

  • Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices; reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.

  • Performs other related duties as required.

  
 EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

High school graduate or equivalent AND one or more of the below qualifications:

  • Previous patient care experience including taking vital signs
  • Nursing student who has successfully completed clinical hours or completion of a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program
  • Acceptance into a Christiana Care approved Patient Care Technician training program
  • Reading and math test provided by Delaware Skills Center


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • BCLS Certification required, or Acceptance into a Christiana Care approved Patient Care Technician training program (will obtain during the program)
  • Successful completion of the Delaware State Test for Nurse Aide Certification
  • Commitment to work at Christiana Care in assigned inpatient acute care area 1800 productive hours over a one-year period following completion of the residency program

SCOPE, PURPOSE, AND FREQUENCY OF CONTACTS:

  • Daily contact with patients, family members, visitors, employees, medical staff, volunteers, and students.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to stand (up to 8 to 12 hours), walk, sit, bend, lift, push, pull, carry, reach, twist, handle, stoop, climb as per unit based Physical Demand Checklist.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Frequent exposure to biological elements with occasional exposure to chemical and environmental elements, as per unit based Physical Demands Checklist.
